A serious water crisis has hit Tunbridge Wells, leaving thousands of residents without access to this essential resource. This ongoing issue stems from the closure of a local treatment plant due to a critical chemical mishap.
The impact is widespread, affecting up to 24,000 customers who have experienced low water pressure or a complete loss of supply since Saturday. South East Water, the responsible utility company, initially estimated the affected population at 6,000, but further testing revealed the true extent of the problem.
Matthew Dean, the head of operations control, attributed the shutdown to a "bad chemical batch," which caused the treatment works to cease operations and led to a depletion of local water storage.
The company has taken measures to mitigate the impact, including redistributing water within their network to maintain supply for as many customers as possible. They have also assured the public that the water currently in supply is safe to use without boiling.
To address the immediate needs of residents, bottled water stations were set up at the Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre and the Sovereign Way East carpark in Tonbridge, operating until 10 pm on Sunday.
Tunbridge Wells MP Mike Martin has personally experienced the water shortage and has been in direct communication with the CEO of South East Water. He shared on social media that the issue was caused by a faulty batch of coagulant chemicals, and that a new set of chemicals has been sourced to resolve the problem.
However, the resolution process is complex and time-consuming. The new chemicals will be introduced on Monday morning, followed by a thorough system check and recharge. This means that water supplies may remain disrupted throughout the day.
