Re-imagining South Asia: A Dialogue Forum by ISSI (2025)

South Asia stands at a turning point — one that could redefine its future for generations to come. Economic turbulence, climate crises, and shifting power dynamics are forcing nations across the region to rethink what cooperation and stability really mean. And that’s exactly what the upcoming Islamabad Conclave 2025, hosted by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), sets out to explore.

Scheduled for December 3 and 4, the fifth edition of ISSI’s signature annual Dialogue Forum will revolve around the theme “Re-imagining South Asia: Security, Economy, Climate, Connectivity.” But here’s where it gets especially intriguing: this year’s event isn’t just about rhetoric. It’s about rethinking geopolitical assumptions and identifying fresh, cooperative solutions for a region too often defined by division.

Over the years, the Islamabad Conclave has evolved into one of Pakistan’s most influential Track 1.5 diplomatic and intellectual gatherings. It brings together government leaders, policymakers, scholars, and strategic thinkers — both from within Pakistan and around the globe — to evaluate emerging global trends and their implications for the region. The purpose? To shape forward-looking strategies that align with Pakistan’s national interests while promoting collective progress across South Asia.

At a time when global politics are in flux and the balance of power is shifting from unipolarity to a complex multipolar world, the Conclave offers space for honest reflection. With major powers competing for influence, unresolved regional disputes festering, and challenges like nuclear brinkmanship, terrorism, and climate disasters mounting, South Asia’s path forward is anything but straightforward. Add to that the region’s chronically low levels of economic integration, and the importance of forums like this becomes all the more evident.

The 2025 Conclave will dive into five interconnected sub-themes: the evolving regional security order in a multipolar world; emerging strategic challenges; transnational terrorism; the economic and environmental nexus; and South Asia’s regional connectivity. Each of these topics will be unpacked in specialized working sessions following the opening plenary. Distinguished experts from Pakistan and abroad will contribute not only their academic insight but also practical experience and policy recommendations, enriching the debate with diverse perspectives.

The event will close with a Concluding Plenary that synthesizes the most significant ideas and proposals generated during discussions. According to Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of ISSI, this edition promises to be the most comprehensive yet — broader in scope, deeper in analysis, and more ambitious in participation. Renowned thinkers and practitioners will examine how South Asia can confront its shared challenges and seize emerging opportunities to build a future of peace, progress, and prosperity. In his words, “This is an exercise in collective imagination — a chance to re-envision South Asia across the domains of security, economy, climate, and connectivity.”

Over the years, the Islamabad Conclave has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s think-tank-led dialogue initiatives. Each edition has expanded its intellectual influence and policy relevance. Last year’s discussions revolved around “Pakistan and the Evolving Global Order,” setting the stage for the deeper, more regionally focused exploration this year. The fifth installment aims to further strengthen this legacy through analytical depth, actionable recommendations, and a commitment to regional cooperation.

In essence, the Islamabad Conclave 2025 is more than a policy forum — it’s a mirror held up to South Asia’s collective conscience. It asks difficult but necessary questions: Can the region overcome entrenched rivalries to move toward genuine connectivity? Can climate and security be addressed through cooperation rather than confrontation? And most importantly, are South Asian nations ready to reimagine their shared destiny, not as competitors, but as collaborators?

What do you think? Is South Asia ready to turn the page and embrace a new era of partnership, or will old divisions continue to define its future?
