Olympic Medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita Shatters Records at the 2025 Japan Open
The 2025 Japan Open swimming competition, held at the Tokyo Aquatics Center, witnessed an extraordinary performance by Olympic silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita. In a stunning display of skill, Matsushita claimed the gold medal in the men's 200-meter Individual Medley (IM) with a new personal best of 1:55.60, solidifying his position as one of the top swimmers in the world.
Matsushita's remarkable achievement came after he secured the fourth seed with a solid morning performance of 1:58.78. The 20-year-old then unleashed a dominant display, slicing over half a second off his previous best of 1:56.35, which was set at the Japanese World Championship Trials in March. This performance propelled him to the third spot among all-time Japanese men and the top position in the season's world rankings, dethroning his teammate Kosuke Makino.
The competition was fierce, with 16-year-old World Junior record holder in the 400m IM, Yumeki Kojima, securing the silver medal with a time of 1:57.51, just shy of his lifetime best. So Ogata rounded out the podium with a time of 1:57.64. Matsushita's performance was particularly impressive, as it would have earned him the bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games and fourth place at the World Championships.
This success follows closely on the heels of last night's men's 400m IM, where 19-year-old Asaki Nishikawa stunned the crowd with a time of 4:07.67. Nishikawa, who finished fifth in the 200m IM final with a time of 1:57.80, showcased the depth of talent at the Japan Open.
The event also featured Loretta (Retta), a former Masters swimmer and coach, who juggles a busy schedule, including her MBA studies, full-time IT work, ownership of the French 75 Boutique, and providing swimming insights for the BBC. Her versatility and dedication to multiple pursuits make her a remarkable figure in the swimming community.
